O Captains, My Captains!
Earlier this year, we got to see Sam Wilson step into the role of Captain America on the streaming screen, thanks to the final episode of Captain America and the Winter Soldier. As you may recall from Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier, Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is a military veteran himself. This backstory played an integral role in the six-episode streaming series, which also featured another character with a military background: Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).

Recently, the military background of Captain America was highlighted in The United States of Captain America #5. This five-issue series saw Rogers and Wilson taking up a cross-country roadtrip in order to rescue Cap’s shield, and just about everyone who has ever wielded the titular symbol of America made an appearance (including Barnes and John Walker).

Each of these five issues introduced a “new” Cap: someone who had been inspired by Rogers and Wilson to pick up their own symbols and join the good fight. In U.S. of Cap #5, we meet a Cap who is in active military service, Captain Jeremy Merrick! He and Rogers end up joining forces in order to combat an evil demagogue.
Happy Veterans Day
