REVIEW: Avengers Murder Mansion in Spider-Man #78.BEY
In Spider-Man #78.BEY by Jed MacKay, Eleonora Carlini, Federico Blee, and Joe Caramagna, with a main cover by Leinil Yu and Sunny Gho, the ongoing saga of Spidey Beyond continues… and this time, it features none other than the Daughters of the Dragon, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing.
Does this issue stand up to the hype that comes with the phrase, “Avengers Murder-Mansion”?
The Amazing Spider-Man #78.BEY
First of all, I loved the X-Men joke that appeared early on in this issue. This is one of my favorite lines in Marvel Comics, and I love when it gets referenced!
However, some of the other dialogue between Misty and Colleen fell a little flat, especially when they were “scoring points” off each other. Let the Daughters of the Dragon support one another, not snipe at one another!
One conceit I did enjoy was the Avengers Murder-Mansion! This twist on a Marvel Comics fixture, the Avengers Mansion, was a fun addition to the story, with the horror movie tropes being the cherry on top.
It was also interesting to see how alien technology was used in this issue. Creating a simulated pocket dimension in which the heroes had to trap their opponent and disable its energy source in order to escape was sort of like a video game level – an interesting frame.
An observation I do have to make: this story sort of reminded me of the Deadpool comics from the mid-90s, especially the ones written by Joe Kelly and Steve Harris, in which Deadpool was enlisted to work for a deep-space organization. Whether or not this is a good or a bad thing simply depends on how you feel about this era of Marvel Comics, but for some reason, I couldn’t shake the comparison!
