RETRO REVIEW: Sandy Days and Nights in Hawkeye (2012) #7
In Hawkeye (2012) #7 by Matt Fraction, Steve Leiber, Jesse Hamm, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulos, with a cover by David Aja, we get an issue that was inspired by Hurricane Sandy. This destructive and deadly hurricane took place in late October and early November 2012 (you’ll note that this story takes place from October 29th through October 30th, Marvel Blog True Believers).
Hawkeyes Versus Sandy
One of the most interesting things about this issue is that it’s divided in half, with two different artists doing the interior art. The first half of the pages were completed by Leiber, and tell the story of Clint’s experience during the hurricane, which involves going to Far Rockaway with Grills to help ensure the safety of Grills Senior and their family home.
Meanwhile, Kate Bishop (world’s greatest archer) is attending an engagement party in New Jersey. This leads to a bunch of New Jersey jokes (no one should be surprised). However, by the end of her storyline, Kate has found some newfound appreciation for the Garden State.
I enjoyed how this issue focused on both of the Hawkeyes by allowing each of them to have their own storyline, and I liked how those stories were divided over the course of the issue.
According to the note on the letters page from editor Stephen Wacker (which you can read in its entirety alongside the issue on Marvel Unlimited), part of the way this issue was able to come together so quickly after Hurricane Sandy is that Fraction was able to recruit Leiber and Hamm to the cause… and both artists are located on the West Coast, so they weren’t dealing with the fallout from Sandy.
However, Wacker explains that it was important to Fraction to show how Sandy affected both New York and New Jersey, and so they worked hard to ensure every member of the team hit their deadlines and managed to get this issue off the presses while the hurricane was still fresh in everyone’s mind.
Hawkeye #7
While Aja doesn’t provide a song recommendation for this issue, Wacker declares a suggestion from letter writer Gary Wordman to be the official musical choice this time around: “Walking On the Moon” by Roseaux & Aloe Blacc.
