The adored comic book artist announced his prognosis to be Stage 3 pancreatic cancer, with a life expectancy of six months to a year.
Perez is the definition of a legend in the arena of comic books. His work spans both of the two behemoth publishers – Marvel Comics and DC Comics – and has defined the perception of so many classic and beloved characters.
What perhaps makes this so much more difficult to write and report is that Perez was not only an immensely talented artist with a wealth of creative fervor, he is also an incredible human being.
Perez has spent his life not only crafting the massive comic book universes that have so defined the imagination of our childhoods – and even our adulthoods – but also giving back to those same fans that he already has given so much.
Three years ago Perez was forced to retire from comic books due to complications with diabetes that has taken much of his vision, but that didn’t stop the revered creator from producing sketches for many of his fans.
Perez started with Marvel Comics in the summer of 1974 writing Marvel’s Astonishing Tales #25, with his early years at the publication spent on their long-running Deadly Hands of Kung Fu magazine.
Responsible for the creation of White Tiger, the first Puerto Rican superhero in comic book history, Perez became a household name with his contribution to The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and The Incredible Hulk comics from 1975-1980.
Perez was also known for creating Taskmaster, a character who made their debut in the MCU in 2021’s Black Widow, as well as creating the art for cult-classic comic stories such as the Infinity Gauntlet miniseries with Ron Lim, and The Korvac Saga.
One of the clearest creative minds in the history of comic books, we are deeply saddened by this news.
Yet, as beloved Marvel legend George Perez announces his cancer diagnosis, we find a silver lining in being able to show our love, support, and admiration for him while he is still with us.
So please, follow the Tweet above, and share just how Perez has been a positive impact on your life, and let’s celebrate the fantastic contribution that George Perez has made to each and every one of us.
