Hulk to Get Grand Design Treatment
In an exclusive article posted to Comics Beat on Thursday, December 9th, 2021, it was revealed that Eisner Award-winning cartoonist Jim Rugg will be giving Hulk the Grand Design treatment in March 2022!
Grand Design 101
This is not the first iconic Marvel Comics character to get the “Grand Design” treatment, which includes two important elements.
The first is that the series summarizes decades worth of comics in order to make a more cohesive and complete narrative. In other words, it retells decades worth of comics in just a few issues, shaving off extraneous details and making an effort to ensure the chronology is without continuity errors or dead-end storylines.
The second element is that the whole series is done by a single cartoonist, which is somewhat uncommon for a Marvel Comic, especially one about one of their biggest heroes, like the Hulk.
Previous titles in the series included the six-part X-Men: Grand Design by Ed Piskor and Fantastic Four: Grand Design, a two-issue series by Tom Scioli.
Interestingly enough, Piskor and Rugg have long collaborated on Cartoonist Kayfabe, a YouTube series on which Scioli has appeared multiple times. Perhaps if we’re going to get another Grand Design series after this one, it will be from another cartoonist who is connected to the channel!
According to the information Rugg shared with The Beat, each page of Hulk: Grand Design will be carefully designed to convey as much information about the Strongest Avenger as possible, with layouts evoking newspaper pages, adverts, and other artifacts from a world with a Hulk.
“Hulk: Grand Design is biography, history, pop culture, and art book,” Rugg said to The Beat.
The series will be two issues long, and will cover the first 300 issues of Incredible Hulk, including the book’s entire run from the 1960s through to its 1990s conclusion..
