RETRO REVIEW: Merry Christmas Daredevil (1988) #253
In Daredevil (1988) #253 by Ann Nocenti, John Romita, Jr., Al Williamson, Joe Rosen, and Max Schelle, we get a glimpse into Hell’s Kitchen on Christmas Eve… and the two biggest characters in the story, Matt Murdock and the Kingpin, are having very different evenings!
Merry Christmas Kingpin
This story takes place on Christmas Eve, in a place on the chronology where Kingpin has recently struck a terrible blow against Matt Murdock, taking away his home, money, and livelihood. However, being a legitimate superhero, Daredevil is still running a hotline that is helping ensure less fortunate people get what they need.
In this issue, we see the people who he helps through the hotline show their appreciation for him by arranging a Christmas feast! It’s a very nice moment, befitting the holiday.
Meanwhile, a few rowdies have been tooling around Hell’s Kitchen in their car and causing all manner of mayhem. Fortunately, Daredevil is on the case. This is a straightforward instance of Daredevil tracking down some bad guys and making them pay the price for their immoral actions, but sometimes, that’s just what a Christmas story needs!
Elsewhere, Kingpin is being a big old jerk, and brooding over his grudge towards Murdock. Meanwhile, Murdock is enjoying the holiday with his loved ones, and celebrating with his family and friends… even though Kingpin has attempted to take everything from him. It’s a real How the Grinch Stole Christmas situation, and I don’t think I have to tell anyone who’s had the chance to watch the first season of Hawkeye on Disney+ that Wilson Fisk is the Grinch!
