RETRO REVIEW: The Gwenpool Holiday Special (2015)
In The Gwenpool Holiday Special (2015) #1, we get an anthology of seasonal stories starring our favorite Marvel superheroes!
This issue featured a main cover by Kris Anka. And of course, it also includes a story about Gwenpool!
The Gwenpool Holiday Special
First up is a story about She-Hulk, “Ever Green,” by Charles Soule, Langdon Foss, Megan Wilson, Travis Lanham, and Clayton Cowles. This story follows the holiday part at 68 Jay Street, the location where She-Hulk and other Marvel characters like Howard the Duck rented office space during this period of Marvel Comics. I enjoyed this frame, and the way the characters from the various stories were all heading to Shulkie’s party.
Next up is a story starring Ms. Marvel, “Ms. Grinch,” by Margaret Stohl, Juan Gedeon, Tamra Bonvillain, and Lanham. In this story, Ms. Marvel vents her frustration at being subjected to Christmas when she doesn’t even celebrate… but things turn out OK when she gets to punch a robber dressed as Santa and spend the evening with Carol Danvers!
In “Hawkeye vs. Deadpool vs. The Holidays” by Gerry Duggan, Danilo S. Beyruth, Cris Peter, and Cowles, two messy superheroes get to spend the holiday together! Fans of Hawkeye on Disney+ will especially want to check this story out.
Next is “Gwenpool’s Holiday Adventure” by Christopher Hastings, Gurihiru, and Hastings. This is the main event, and it’s on par with The Unbelievable Gwenpool series, one of my favorite Marvel Comics titles of all time. I especially enjoyed the moment at the end of this story, when Gwen and Ms. Marvel get the chance to bond with one another!
