Top 12 Marvel Comics of 2021 [Part 2]
Yesterday, Marvel Blog counted down the first half of the Top 12 Marvel Comics of 2021! And today, on the final day of the year, we’re counting down the remaining six.
-
The Thing
While we’ve only had the chance to review the first issue of The Thing for Marvel Blog, it’s off to such a good start that we’re including it on this list anyway!
This story, which is by Easy Rawlins scribe Walter Mosely, takes place in the history of the Fantastic Four, and centers the ever-lovin’ eponymous superhero. While we’re not sure where this story will be heading, we can’t wait to find out! Rounding out the creative team is Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire, and Joe Sabino.
-
It’s Jeff
One of the most important things to transpire for Marvel Comics in 2021 was the advent of Infinity Comics! These scrolling webcomics are debuted exclusively on Marvel Unlimited, and take advantage of the style of comic you might otherwise find on an app like WEBTOON or Tapas… but featuring the Marvel Comics characters!
In It’s Jeff by Kelly Thompson and Gurihiru, we get to see what Gwenpool’s pet land shark, Jeff, has been up to… and let’s just say that Jeff’s future is looking bright!
-
Demon Days
In the Demon Days comics by Peach Momoko, with an English adaptation by Zack Davisson and lettering by Ariana Maher, we get to see a brave new version of the Marvel Comics world… one that combines familiar Marvel super heroes with Japanese mythology.
In addition to giving us new versions of familiar characters, this series also features incredible back matter, with special articles explaining how the classic mythology influenced the brand-new Demon Days.
-
Reptil
In this four-issue series by Terry Blas, Enid Balám, Victor Olazaba, Carlos Lopez, and Joe Sabino, we are re-introduced to Humberto Lopez, A.K.A. Reptil, who can change parts of his body to any dinosaur he can think of!
In addition to telling a great super hero story about a returning character, this series also introduced new characters, like Humberto’s cousins, the magic-using Eva and the costume-making Jules (who we already got to see more of Marvel’s Voices: Comunidades).
-
Marvel’s Voices (& Women of Marvel)
Speaking of Marvel’s Voices, the comic series based on the podcast hosted by Angélique Roché, had a banner year! There were multiple entries in the series this year: Comunidades, Identity, Pride, and Legacy. Each of these entries in the anthology series that puts the spotlight on a different group of creators and characters who make Marvel Comics great!
In addition to the Marvel’s Voices anthology, we also got Women of Marvel (2021) #1, another anthology title with a similar format. All of these issues were bursting with an amazing variety of incredible short comics… and they often gave us key narrative pieces for other ongoing titles and characters!
Furthermore, with Marvel’s Voices being spotlighted with a Free Comic Book Day one-shot in 2022, it seems like this outstanding series will be here to stay. Excelsior!
-
Gamma Flight
In the five-issue series Gamma Flight by Crystal Frasier, Al Ewing, Lan Medina, Antonio Fabela, and Sabino, with covers by Leinil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho, we get to find out what happened to the supporting cast from Immortal Hulk… including my favorite character, Dr. Charlene McGowan, who gets a particularly great moment in the final issue.
This series combined elements of the world outside your window with classic Marvel Comics continuity for an irresistible miniseries that will stay on our minds for years to come!
