Venom Almost had a Much Larger Role in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’
The iconic comic book creation that showed up in the post-credit scene for Marvel Studios’ biggest film of the year was almost much more important to the story, as the film’s writers reveal that Venom almost had a much larger role in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Sony and Marvel proved to be a duo for the ages as Spider-Man: No Way Home has easily become the most successful film of 2021.
With the celebration of nearly 20 years of live-action adaptations of Peter Parker, the film featured some incredible appearances and five of the character’s most iconic villains from nearly every iteration.
The one surprise addition to the film came in the form of Sony’s most successful solo Spider-Verse character: Venom, who arrived via a post-credit scene.
The film’s writers, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers revealed that Venom almost had a much larger role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, with the character being present in the final battle in early versions of the script.
Speaking with Variety, McKenna and Sommers made it very clear that making Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock a part of the climactic final battle was, “definitely discussed.”
While it is a small line, there is definitely a world in which Venom could have been of assistance in the massive battle. The writing duo also explored more of why Venom himself was included in the collection of Spider-Man antagonists who were transported to the main MCU.
McKenna states, “The idea is that the symbiote has knowledge of other universes. Buried in his brain is some knowledge of that connection.”
While including the Symbiote anti-hero into the equation of the final battle would’ve been amazing, the question of whether or not it made sense for the story of Peter Parker is where McKenna and Sommers ultimately made the decision to exclude him.
“We had to figure out a way that this [movie] told the story of this Peter Parker right now, organically coming off of where we lest the last movie,” Mckenna Stated, “That was always our north star. Yeah, it’s a big fun idea. Let’s not forget Peter. You cant get lost in the mix. It has to be his emotional journey.”
