RETRO REVIEW: Nightmare Time in Strange Tales (1987) #7
In Strange Tales Featuring Cloak and Dagger & Doctor Strange (1987) #7 by Bill Mantlo, Larry Alexander, Gerry Talaoc, Ken Bruzenak, and Paul Becton, we get a story that sees the three Marvelous heroes facing off against Doctor Strange’s earliest antagonist: Nightmare!
Strange Tales (1987) #7
In this issue, Cloak and Dagger are living together in an abandoned church in New York City. Right off the bat, this narrative element won me over, because it reminded me of the Cloak and Dagger show on Freeform, which I enjoyed immensely (although in that series, the church was in New Orleans rather than New York City).
The story sees Cloak having problems with nightmares (and since we know who the villain is, we can kind of see what’s going on here). The couple goes searching for Strange, who is meant to be dead at this point (he does that all the time, Marvel Blog True Believers).
And once they find Strange, we get some great art, which calls to mind the early issues of Howard the Duck, one of my favorite comics about the Marvel multiverse.
Nightmare will be returning to the panels of Marvel Comics in 2022. Could this mean he’ll also be appearing in the MCU? Some have speculated that the supervillain could be appearing in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. We’ll have to wait and see!
