Beloved Comic Book Creator George Perez Sadly Passes Away at 67
The entire industry has experienced a remarkable sadness as beloved and iconic comic book creator George Perez sadly passes away at the age of 67.
There were few in the world of comic books who could embody the iconic label in the way that George Perez.
A man whose talent transcends either of the massive publishers, Perez is an entity that is equally respected and adored by both Marvel and DC fans.
At the conclusion of 2021, Perez announced to audiences he had received a cancer diagnosis, and that his time was limited due to stage 3 pancreatic cancer that was threatening his life.
The adored comic book artist was incredibly open to his fans about his struggle and affliction, telling them that he had chosen to forgo any chemotherapy, and opting to instead focus on the enjoyment of his remaining time.
He then went on to use a lot of his final months planning several signing and meet and greet evens with fans, as the selfless iconic desired those interactions as some of his final moments.
in 2019 Perez had announced his intention to retire from his longstanding role as a comic book artist, due to various health issues, some of which severely impacted his eyesight.
Throughout the final months of his life, Perez did in fact make several convention appearances where permitted, as the COVID-19 pandemic limited some of them; while he made good on several commissions and signings.
Perez first began his comic book career as an assistant to famed Fantastic Four artist Rich Buckler in the early part of 1970; with his first-ever credited work in the industry coming in 1974s Marvels Astonishing TAles, in which he drew a parody panel to the character Deathlok.
The phenomena artist would continue to earn his reputation with Marvel, working on The Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu title, and was responsible for the creation of the first Puerto Rican superhero, White Tiger.
Despite his work with Marvel, Perez has become a staple in DC’s comic book history with his work on the Justice League but maintained his status as a fan favorite for both publishers.
