Eternals Cameo For Moon Knight Was Discarded For Cost Concerns
The first season of Moon Knight is finished after 6 glorious episodes! While there are several easter eggs in Moon Knight, a recent interview with Jeremy Slater by The Direct revealed that the writer had wanted an Eternals cameo!
The Eternals made their debut in the MCU last year, and while the fanfare surrounding the film wasn’t as great as others, the narrative made up an interesting and important part of the back lore of the MCU.
The Eternals Cameo That Almost Happened
In an interview with The Direct, Jeremy Slater who was the executive producer on Moon Knight as well as a head writer spoke on the potential Eternals cameo that almost happened.
Jeremy Slater had originally planned for the episodes to contain an opening featuring the Eternals, specifically Kingo stemming from his relationship with Kumail Nanjiani, during a flashback involving Khonshu and his past avatars. In his interview with The Direct Slater stated:
“I tried very hard to get the Eternals into the show, just because I’m buddies with Kumail Nanjiani… I want[ed] some Kingo. At one point, there was a flashback on the page that sort of showed one of Khonshu’s Avatars back in ancient Egypt, sort of dealing with Ammit being locked away, and Alexander the Great, and all of that stuff. You sort of saw this Avatar team-up with the Eternals.”
Unfortunately, the scene would have come at an apparent colossal cost. Slater stated that the budget for the series would not have allowed them to film the scene, and the money for the scene would have most likely been taken from the effects-heavy final episode.
Slater did not shut the door on future collaborations of the Eternals with other elements of the MCU, desiring for the remaining Eternals to begin building connections with other parts of the MCU.
The Eternals Connections to Other MCU Characters
While the Eternals have yet to connect with any other MCU characters within their respective films, The Eternals film did name drop important connections between current MCU characters. Namely, that of Thor and Avenger’s villain Thanos, speaking on off-screen activities.
In one scene Kingo mentioned that he was friends with Odin. Kingo further mentioned how he had befriended Thor as a child, comedically remarking on how Thor had big shot status as an Avenger and wouldn’t return his calls.
Further, the end credits scene featuring Starfox (Eros), dealt with Starfox introducing himself as the brother of Thanos. While Thanos is a Titan, this leads to the implication that Starfox was an Eternal on Titan and in some way bonded to Thanos.
The Eternals may have connections to further MCU characters, as their lifespans are massive and they have been on earth for centuries. Further, Starfox being from Titan means there is a possibility that other Eternals from different planets may exist.
Moon Knight’s first season has finished, and a second season is definitely possible and very likely.
Maybe the Eternals cameo will happen in the next season! Further connecting The Eternals to parts of the MCU!
