Taika Waititi Wanted ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ to Give Fans a Thor They Didn’t Want
The man behind the revitalization of Marvel’s God of Thunder is never afraid to go against the grain, and that seemed to be the foundation for his latest outing, as Taika Waititi reportedly wanted Thor: Love and Thunder to give fans a Thor they didn’t want.
It is difficult to overstate how important Taika Waititi has been in developing the current incarnation of Thor; a character who went from one of the most disappointing of the original six Avengers to the only one with a fourth solo film.
Waititi has been instrumental in reimagining just who Thor is, or who he could be, by delving deep into the mythos of the character, his past trauma, and the nearly endless capabilities of the man who brings him to life, Chris Hemsworth.
Hemsworth’s Thor is the Monster of Waititi’s Doctor Frankenstein, and it is a relationship that has taken the character from overlooked and uncertain, to be one of the most popular Marvel heroes that the MCU can boast of in its current lineup.
The brilliance of Waitti as a director, however, is not how he delivers the character we all want to see, but how he adapts the hero to become a character we didn’t know that we wanted to see; which was his exact goal going into his second Thor entry.
In a recent interview with AP News, Taika Waititi admitted his desire for Thor: Love and Thunder to give fans a Thor they didn’t want.
The director stated, “I wanted to show him in a light that most Thor fans wouldn’t really want if you were to tell them. If you were to say to them; ‘Yeah, I’m going to make Thor in love,’ It’s probably the last thing that a Thor fan really wants to hear.”
Waititi added, “For me, it’s good to give fans something they don’t know that they want. With Ragnarok especially, when I signed on, a lot of fans were freaked out by that. They were like, ‘Who is this guy? He’s going to take our precious Thor and ruin it.'”
He concluded by stating, “And I was like, ‘Yeah. Exactly. That’s exactly my intention. And I’m going to make it better, you just don’t know yet.'”
the reality is that Waititi is absolutely correct, he dismantled the Thor that Marvel had built to that point, and crafted an even better version in his place.
