‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Delivers Whopping $29 Million in Preview Screenings
It was a film that, despite its rather short promotional campaign, has been one of the most anticipated for fans of the Marvel Universe, and that was proven again this week as Thor: Love and Thunder delivers a whopping $29 million in preview screenings.
He has truly become one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular characters and the proof of that fact has come once again, as fans have shown out in droves to support the God of Thunder’s record-setting fourth solo film in the ever-expanding MCU.
The film features no shortage of exciting reasons to get to a theater- including the arrival of Christian Bales phenomenal Gorr the God Butcher and Natalie Portman’s Mighty return as Jane Foster- the second collaborative effort between Taika WAitit and Marvel Studios is seemingly destined for success.
Although the movie is slated to debut today, Thor: Love and Thunder has delivered a whopping $29 million in preview screenings, putting it in the company of some of the most successful films ever for that early window.
As reported initially by Variety, who stated, “The Thursday opening is the fifth-highest for an MCU movie and the 13th highest ever, tied with Rogue One [: A Star Wars Story].”
What is even more interesting- and a fact that speaks. to the tremendous power of the Marvel universe, is that the preview outing is the “second-biggest Thursday launch of 2022, behind only Doctor Strange in the MUltiverse of Madness, which had $36 million.”
The box office outing for this latest Thor film will be an intriguing story to follow, as there is no way to really quantify how the film will do with audiences in theatrical space; with the presence of Disney+, and the unpredictable nature of this current consumer base.
There are many who believe that the film will do better than Waititi and Marvel’s first outing, Thor: Ragnarok, which opened to $123 million, but that was long before the Disney+ system was in place; which, combined with rather negative reviews, it could be bad news for Love and Thunder.
Although there is a lot of uncertainty in that respect, there is a lot of optimism from experts that this preview screening success is a sign that the film will be a top-tier earner for Marvel this summer.
