Taika Waititi Doesn’t Want to do ‘Thor 5’ “Right Now”
He has been one of Marvel’s most important directors, and has done perhaps the most for a character that had been underutilized before he took the reigns for the phenomenal Thor: Ragnarok; after Thor: Love and Thunder, however, Taika Waititi doesn’t want to Thor 5 “right now.”
In the decade-long history of the MCU, few filmmakers have been as creative, vibrant, and comical in their projects as the man who is almost singlehandedly responsible for reimaging one of the studio’s most struggling characters.
Before Taika Waititi, Thor was a hero in deep need of an overhaul; the first two films of the characters saga were marred by underwhelming storytelling, and disappointing performances despite the fantastic actors being cast in these roles.
Even in the massive Avengers films that Thor was a part of, it always felt as though the creatives behind the camera just didn’t know how to best unlock the hero’s full potential, and make the most of what Chris Hemsworth had to offer a character that was uniquely difficult to adapt from the source material.
That all changed when Taika Waititi took over Thor: Ragnarok and crafted the revitalization that the character so desperately needed while delivering a film that is easily one of the most important and beloved of the MCU today.
It was that film that seemed to point Marvel in the right direction, and inform what they did with the character in the final two installments of the Infinity Saga; where he maintained one of the best character arcs in that epic conclusion.
Waititi returned to the character to craft Thor: Love and Thunder, and continued the epic reconstruction of who Thor is in a brand new way; and with that film delivering what is- in our opinion- one of his best films yet, there are questions as to whether or not he will return to the director’s chair for the heroes fifth film.
In a recent interview, Taika Waititi admitted that he doesn’t want to do Thor 5, “Right now”; and elaborated on the circumstances that would bring him back to the franchise.
Speaking to Uproxx, Waititi stated, “Well, yeah, not right now. If Chris was into it and stuff, I’m sure others an even crazier thing that we could probably come up with, It’s just got to be something that sat least, that no one expects.”
Waititi continued, “With Love and Thunder, we were like, what would be good after Ragnarok? What could we do? And I was thinking, well, I like kind of like playing with the fans a little bit.”
The director added, “And I was like, the thing that no Thor fan really wants to see is the word ‘love’ ina. Thor title. ‘I’m Thor, ad I go out and smash things and stuff.’ No, but Thor being in love, the idea of love surrounding Thor, is actually pretty amazing. And there’s a character I want to see.”
We can only hope that Taika returns to continue at least one more film so that we can have a proper Taika-Thor trilogy.
