MarvelBlog News for July 18th, 2022
On this week’s MarvelBlog News; Marvel cleaned up with its Emmy nominations and then cast a bunch of new people.
Meanwhile, the blame game started on the underachieving Thor: Love and Thunder, and some tantalizing rumors popped up, and it ends with a Ms. Marvel surprise! (No spoilers, of course!)
The Confirmed Casting
As I’ve mentioned for the last few weeks, you should greet all poorly sourced Marvel stories with great skepticism. Still, MarvelBlog News has had a few casting confirmations come from viable outlets.
The most significant one involves Ironheart, which has cast Han Solo in a prominent role! No, I’m not talking about Harrison Ford, although everyone’s having a ton of fun with that bit of clickbait. Instead, the new addition is Aiden Ehrenreich, who played the character in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The actor first gained attention in Hail, Caesar!, a Coen Brothers movie that earned Ehrenreich some awards season recognition. The downside is that he’ll hear the words “Would that it were…” from strangers for the rest of his life.
Ehrenreich is about to garner more online acclaim for his work in the meme-riffic movie, Cocaine Bear, which is – I swear to you – based on actual events. Disney already snagged the Snakes on a Plane dude a while back. So, it might as well cast Mr. Cocaine Bear, too, right?
As usual, Marvel didn’t comment on the actor’s role. However, Ironheart is currently filming in Atlanta. So we’ll probably watch it over the next 12-18 months.
I’m less enthusiastic about the next bit of casting. As a superfan of The Good Place, I loved everything about the show…except for Adam Scott, who sucks in everything.
My wife swears he’s terrific in the Apple+ series, Severance. But I’ll never know because Severance stars Adam Scott, thereby precluding me from watching it. As such, I’m deeply conflicted to report that Scott will appear in Madame Web, a show that claimed absolutely perfect casting…until now. What the Hell, Sony?!
Speaking of which, Sony wouldn’t confirm Scott’s character. However, I presume he’ll be super-annoying because that’s his entire range as an actor.
The Rumored Casting
Again, take this one with a grain of salt. Until Kevin Feige stands on a podium and announces it, I won’t believe a word.
However, rumors about Fantastic Four casting and directing options have exploded and must be a focal point of MarvelBlog News this week.
Remember how I said Marvel was shooting the moon for the project’s director? Yeah, if reports are to be believed, Steven Spielberg (!) was the target.
Ok I'm not in the scoop game anymore, but have heard that Marvel did reach out to Spielberg's team to gauge interest in directing Fantastic Four, but that's as far as the "discussions" went presumably because SS has no interest.

Other sources have refuted the rumor that Spielberg will direct as nonsense, but that’s not what this journalist states. Instead, the argument is that Marvel offered Spielberg, who wasn’t interested.
I absolutely believe that might have happened, as it’s not the least bit unusual in Hollywood to take a big swing like that. Somehow, that’s not the showstopper rumor, though.
Instead, some folks believe that John Krasinski won’t play Reed Richards in Fantastic Four. They think his appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a one-off.
The rumor of the moment is that Penn Badgley, the former Gossip Girl (he was, I swear!) and current You serial killer, will lead Marvel’s First Family.
I…can see that. Badgley has shown incredible range on You and has more than 20 years of experience in the industry…at the age of 35. Insiders speculate that Marvel wants someone in their 20s or 30s to play Reed Richards for a Hugh Jackman-esque amount of time.
At 42, Krasinski isn’t too old for that, but his recent success as a director may have reduced his overall availability. Marvel likes its cast to be ready whenever needed. So they’re effectively on call at all times.
Adding to this rumor, the leading candidates for Sue Richards are Melissa Benoist (yes, Supergirl) and Stranger Things actress Natalia Dyer. I buy the former more than the latter.
Marvel Miscellany
Marvel stories performed exceptionally well during this year’s Emmy nominations. As MarvelBlog News reports Hawkeye earned two nods for its stunt work, while What If…? managed three for its animation and voice work.
The bigger success stories were Loki and Moon Knight. Loki managed six below-the-line nominations in technical awards. Similarly, Moon Knight garnered eight, including an extremely deserving nod for F. Murray Abraham as the voice of Khonshu.
Somehow, none of the performers in these series earned an acting nod, which is a bit disheartening after WandaVision did so well last year. Overall, Marvel Studios claimed 19 nominations and will probably win several Emmys.
So, when someone tries to tell you that the shows are lacking in CGI, here’s your argument to the contrary. Marvel’s got the best VFX on television. In other Marvel news, the blame game has started on Thor: Love and Thunder. It’s an inevitable part of any box office disappointment.
The argument against Thor 4 stems from a Marvel mandate to keep the story under two hours. In the process, Marvel made some cuts, including work involving the returns of Peter Dinklage and Jeff Goldblum.
Also, Lena Headey appeared as an unnamed character, but her role got deleted entirely. That led the actress into a weird legal dispute. I’ve also got one other casting note that makes me extremely happy. Rafael Casal of Blindspotting will play a significant role in Loki season two.
If you’re unfamiliar with the actor, PLEASE watch Blindspotting. It was one of the best movies of the 21st century.
Finally, we’ve got this Ms. Marvel tidbit for you:
#MsMarvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilal Fallah reveal that the finale’s post-credits scene was shot by Nia DaCosta!
“That was actually shot by Nia DaCosta while she was doing The Marvels. She was already shooting with Brie Larson and Iman.” pic.twitter.com/vWMkP7pnwT

So, MarvelBlog News is here to report that the director of The Marvels has already dipped her toe into the MCU! More importantly, there’s this.
Yes, Iman Vellani has decloaked to perform an AMA about her role as Ms. Marvel. Since she’s a longtime Redditor, this must have been such a thrill.
