James Gunn Admits his Focus Isn’t on the MCU’s Future
There have been few Marvel franchises that can boast a level of success akin to the Guardians of the Galaxy, and with the third film set to conclude this incarnation of the team, many have questions about its potential; James Gunn, however, has made it clear his focus isn’t on the MCU’s future.
We have been steadfast in our praise and adoration for the brilliant creative mind of James Gunn; one that completely revitalized the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and acted as the birthplace of the universe cosmic realm that has become so important.
It was Gunn’s brilliance and creativity on the first two Guardians of the Galaxy entries that led the way for Marvel to greenlight projects like Thor: Ragnarok; and their willingness to embrace a more eclectic and unique style, to slightly break free from the Marvel mold fans have come to expect.
His comedic tone and his sci-fi aesthetic have seeped into every Marvel film that has taken place in the cosmos, from the Guardian’s franchise to Avengers: Infinity War; so much so, that it is difficult to imagine a world in which Gunn doesn’t remain the mad scientist that Marvel has so relied upon.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set to be the third and concluding project for the franchise, many fans have wondered whether or not the direct could revitalize a new Guardians team; but James Gunn has made it very clear, that his focus isnt on the MCU’s future, it’s on these characters.
Speaking with IGN (reported by The Direct), Gunn was asked about the future of The Guardians, to which he confirmed, “This iteration of the team is done after [Gaurdians of the Galaxy Vol. 3].”
He then went on to confirm that there are no plans for a new version of The Guardians, noting, “I never said there was a new team. I don’t care about the new team.”
Gunn added, “All I care about is like what this team is and being really true to the story of these characters and finishing the story in an honorable way and telling Rocket’s story fully, and telling NEbula’s story fully and telling Quill’s story fully and really getting into what this is now.”
“I’m not into like everyone going off here and this is to set up this and this is to set up. I don’t care.” Gunn continued, “U never have cared about any of that. All I care about is the story here and now, moving an audience, sharing our love for the material, and our love for each other with the audience.”
It is certainly clear from that statement that James Gunn is very focused on the present incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and that- at least to this point- there are no plans for the franchise to continue with Gunn at the helm; nor will he be attached to develop it.
