‘She/ Hulk’ Writer Discusses Wanting to Bring Jennifer Walters into the MCU for Years
The long-awaited debut of the MCU’s newest hero has finally arrived, and she has brought with her the charisma, comedic charm, and cool factor that made her one of the comic most iconic heroes; and it turns out, that She/ Hulk writer, Jessica Gao, wanted to bring Jennifer Walters to the MCU years ago.
There are few characters in the massive history of Marvel as a publication that is as unique and as interesting as Jennifer Walters; a hero who is both a superhuman that protects the innocent from the power of villainy and a lawyer protecting other heroes in a legal sense.
It is that unique backstory and placement in the source material that has given her a very unique perspective, and a perspective that has been adapted to the live-action franchise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and crafted one of the more unique heroes the MCU has to offer.
In a recent interview, however, She/ Hulk writer Jessica Gao revealed that she had been trying desperately to bring Jennifer Walters to the MCU for years, starting with a pitch for a Black Widow solo film that would see the character debut.
Gao stated, “The first thing I ever pitched on was for the Black Widow movie, and U actually had She-Hulk in my pitch. She was my favorite character from the comics, and I just wanted to see her in the MCU.”
Gao added, ” at one point, I think it was [Marvel executive] Brad Winderbaum who said, ‘It kind of feels like you’re pitching us a She-Hulk movie with Black Widow in it.”
It is interesting to hear the passion that Gao has for the character, and how desperately she wanted this character to make her way into the massive and evergrowing live-action Marvel universe, but it is that same passion that has birthed this phenomenal adaptation of the character.
We cannot wait to see what Gao, and director Kat Coiro, have in store for the continued evolution of Walters in the character’s first solo effort.
