‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ Almost Reunited the Original Six Avengers
While Deadpool & Wolverine featured many returning characters from Marvel’s past, including Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, Daphne Keen as X-23, and Aaron Stanford as Pyro, the film ended up being a celebration of the Fox Marvel Universe, not a reunion of past Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) heroes.
In the end, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy focus on characters who have largely been overlooked or whose cultural impact has waned since they last appeared on the big screen—characters who “finally got their ending.”
The ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Writers Wanted to Reunite the Avengers
In a recent interview with IndieWire, however, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that, at one point, the Deadpool and Wolverine team planned on reuniting the original Avengers.
In an early concept for the film, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would have been present when Wade Wilson travels to the Sacred Timeline and attempts to join the Avengers.
“We haven’t told anybody this, but there was a version of that scene very, very early on that wasn’t written, but was conceived, that had all the Avengers in the room,” Wernick said. “And Wade was rejected and then he dressed all the Avengers down in a way only Deadpool could do.”
“He was going to get mad and basically attack each one of them in a vicious kind of way,” added Reese.
Peter Would Have Been Worthy
In the version of the scene, Deadpool would have been joined by Peter (Rob Delaney). The action would have culminated with Deadpool frantically trying to pick up Thor’s hammer.
After being unable to do so, Peter would then causally lift Mjolner.
“Peter casually picked up Thor’s Hammer in the background,” Reese said. “That was the joke. Originally, Peter accompanied him there. There were never screenplay pages, but it was the idea of the scene. I remember pitching that he was going to try to get Captain America to swear. I don’t really remember too much else in terms of the details, but yeah, he was going to dress them down to be sure.”
Will We See the Original Avengers Again?
While it would have been great to see the Avengers back in action, it sounds like the idea never came close to fruition.
With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, however, we may still get a chance to see the iconic team once again.
