Don Cheadle Asks “What’s Armor Wars” Amid Rumors of the Project’s Cancellation
With the status of Marvel Studios’ Armor Wars still unclear, star Don Cheadle is not giving anything away.
For those unaware, Armor Wars was initially announced in December 2020 as a Disney+ series. The Iron Man spinoff was set to follow the adventures of Cheadle’s James Rhodes/War Machine as the character deals with Tony Stark’s death and his place in the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Since the initial announcement that Armor Wars was in development, however, updates have been few and far between. In 2022, Marvel announced that the project was being developed as a movie. Other than that, the studio has been silent.
Cheadle Previously Shared His Excitement About ‘Armor Wars’
Despite the seeming lack of progress on Armor Wars, Don Cheadle continued to tease the project last year.
“Hopefully the favorite one that I’m going to do is Rhodey movie that we’re going to shoot,” Cheadle explained to GQ. “I think I’m every successive film, he’s coming more and more out of Tony’s shadow and becoming his own person but I still think we haven’t really figured out who he is and really dug into that so that’s what the movie is for. It was going to be a series, now we’re going to do it as a film. Armor Wars. So I’m looking forward to that.”
Has the Film Been Canceled?
Nearly four years after Armor Wars was initially announced, however, the project seems no closer to coming to fruitiion. Additionally, the Marvel Studios of 2024 is drastically different from the one in 2020.
After a difficult 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Marvel Studios would only release two to three films yearly. This revelation, combined with the news that Disney had “quietly shelved” some projects, has led many to wonder if Armor Wars has been canceled.
Cheadle Plays Coy
During a recent appearance on The Today Show, Don Cheadle was asked about the long-awaited project.
With a coy smile, Cheadle simply asked, “What’s Armor Wars?”
“You know the line, I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you. And, I just met you guys, so I don’t want to have to do that,” he continued.
Armor Wars’s Status Remains Unclear
With Cheadle unwilling (or perhaps unable) to talk about the future of Armor Wars, questions about the project’s future will continue to swirl.
Hopefully, we get an official statement from Marvel soon.
