‘Agatha All Along’ Creator Jac Schaeffer Weighs in on Teen’s Identity
One of the biggest mysteries shrouding Agatha All Along is the identity of Joe Locke’s bewildering Teen.
The young Agatha super-fan seemingly appeared out of nowhere in the witch’s life, freeing her from Wanda’s spell and driving her to walk the Witches Road.
Later, Agatha discovers that Teen is incapable of revealing his identity. When Locke’s character tries to tell the witch his name, his mouth is magically covered and shut.
Fan’s Believe Teen is Billy Kaplan
As the mystery of Agatha All Along has unfolded, fans have produced numerous theories about Teen’s true identity.
The prevailing theory is that Teen is really Billy Kaplan. Those familiar with the Marvel comics will know that Kaplan is the reincarnated soul of Wanda’s son, Billy Maximoff. Eventually, he becomes Wiccan, a powerful hero and member of the Young Avengers.
Other theories about Teen’s true identity include Agatha’s son, Nicolas Scratch, or perhaps the real Billy Maximoff.
Jac Schaeffer Weighs In
In a recent interview with Variety, Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer discussed the mystery surrounding Teen.
“I don’t like hiding things from the audience, just to then be, like, ‘Boo!’” Schaeffer says.
“There’s no artistry to that. So when we talked about obscuring who he is, the first question is, why? What is the utility of that? The answer is, it’s about the effect that his mystery has on Agatha. What does that do to her? How does it motivate her? How does it hit her emotionally?”
In reference to fans’ obsession with trying to read Teen’s lips for a clue to his identity, Schaeffer revealed that there are better clues hidden throughout the first two episodes of Agatha All Along.
“This is what I would say: That’s not the first place I’d look,” she says. “It’s not entirely irrelevant: But there are other places to look.”
Theories Abound
Like Agatha All Along, Schaeffer’s first Marvel series, WandaVision, spawned numerous fan theories. For example, viewers were convinced that Mephisto was behind Westview during the show’s run. While that was not the case, the mystery surrounding Schaeffer’s shows is part of the fun.
Discussing the rampant fan theories, Schaeffer admits that it can be anxiety-inducing.
“It still stops my heart,” Schaeffer says. “My preoccupation is maximum viewer enjoyment, so I get nervous when people get ahead of it. I have to trust that humans are capable of deciding what kind of experience they want. But I comfort myself with the knowledge that it’s a circuitous path, and I hope that that path is enjoyable.”
