Marvel’s Head of Animation Gives Fans a Preview of ‘Eyes of Wakanda’
Following up on its success with What If…?, Marvel Studios released a second animated this year in the form of X-Men ’97. A continuation of the popular 1990s cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series, the show was an undeniable hit for Marvel Studios.
Despite the controversy surrounding the show’s creator, Beau Demayo, X-Men ’97 was a ratings hit for Disney+. Also lauded by critics, fans of the original series, and new viewers alike, the new X-Men series proved that Marvel Studios had what it took to create quality animation.
Building on its previous successes, Marvel is now developing three more animated series. The first is a spin-off of What If…? titled Marvel Zombies. The second series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, will explore an alternate version of Peter Parker.
‘Eyes of Wakanda’
While both premises sound interesting, neither series will directly affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The same can not be said for the third series in development, Eyes of Wakanda.
The upcoming Disney+ series will be set on the MCU’s sacred timeline and tell the story of Wakandan warriors who must venture out into the world and retrieve vibranium artifacts.
“Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story,” the official description reads.
Brad Winderbaum Previews the Upcoming Series
In a recent interview with ABC13, Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation shed some more light on Eyes of Wakanda, revealing that the series will take viewers through time.
“We meet different War Dogs at different points in time, at different historical events where they have to go in and do their jobs,” he said. “But oftentimes, it pulls at their ethical boundaries and their heartstrings.”
Executive-produced by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, the upcoming series sounds like it will delve into the lore and history of Wakanda, giving fans a broader appreciation for the country’s history.
“Eyes of Wakanda, more than any other show we’re doing in animation, ties directly into the MCU. This is a story about Wakandan history,” Winderbaum revealed earlier this year on the Official Marvel Podcast.
“It’s an awesome show. The action is insane and the storytelling is fantastic. It’s both about the history of Wakanda, but also expands into the greater MCU at different time periods. If you’re a fan of the movies, I think this show is going to be a real treat.”
When Will ‘Eyes of Wakanda’ Debut?
At this time, Marvel has not announced when Eyes of Wakanda will hit Disney+.
