‘Agatha All Along’ Creator Explains Wanda Maximoff’s Absence
While Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff did not appear in Agatha All Along, her shadow loomed large over the show’s events.
Following her sacrificial decision to destroy the Darkhold in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the fate of the Scarlet Witch was left ambiguous. While she seemingly perished, Marvel intentionally did not show Wanda’s body.
With the arrival of Agatha All Along then, the question of Wanda’s fate was at the forefront of viewers’ minds.
‘Agatha All Along’ Addressed Wanda’s Fate Right Away
Perhaps in reference to fan speculation, Agatha All Along began with Agatha Harkness attempting to solve a mysterious death. Under the influence of Wanda’s spell, Agatha believed she was a police detective tasked with figuring out an unsolved murder.
When visiting the morgue, the library card on the victim’s book magicallly revealed the name Wanda Maximoff.
While Agatha All Along seemed to admit that Wanda was dead right off the bat, the series’ unpredictable nature and Agatha’s unreliability kept fans guessing.
With the revelation that Teen was in fact Billy Maximoff, Wanda’s fate once again came to the forefront.
When Billy finally asked Agatha if his mother was alive, Agatha quipped, “If you want a straight answer, ask a straight lady.”
Why Was Wanda’s Absence
Ultimately, Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer opted to keep Wanda’s fate a mystery.
“[Wanda’s resurrection] wasn’t really a for-real conversation, and to speak plainly, it’s a larger conversation of casting, logistics, availability, and budget,” Schaeffer explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “Also, to me, on a creative level, it didn’t feel fair to the character of Agatha. This is her story, and the idea of bringing Wanda back felt like it would upend that in a way.”
Going forward, it seems likely that Wanda will somehow return. With Agatha and Billy setting off to find Tommy, the Maximoff story will continue.
When asked when the next chapter in that story would be written, Schaeffer admitted that she did not know.
“I don’t have an answer for that. The intention is that Billy now has Agatha as his spirit guide, and that Billy wants to find Tommy,” she explained. “How? When? Where? I don’t know the answers to those questions.”
Agatha All Along is streaming now on Disney+.
