James Gunn Discusses the Future of the Guardians of the Galaxy
James Gunn’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has come to an end, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we have seen the last of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The last time we saw the rag-tag team of intergalactic heroes, the original Guardians had gone their separate ways. Peter Quill decided to return to Earth to reconnect with his family, Gamora left to lead the Ravagers, Mantis set out on her own, while Nebula and Drax stayed on Knowhere.
By the time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 came to an end, a new iteration of the team, led by Rocket Raccoon and comprised of Groot, Obfonteri, Cosmo, Bluorp, Phyla, and Adam Warlock, had formed to continue protecting the galaxy.
Will the Guardians Return?
While Marvel has previously announced that Star-Lord will return, the fate of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise remains clouded.
Interestingly, in a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Gunn revealed that he had discussions with Marvel about the Guardians’ future before leaving.
“The Ravagers show, I thought could be a fun thing. Legendary Star-Lord really, frankly, we had a whole idea for that,” he explained.
“And then Rocket & Groot… To be honest, Rocket & Groot is what Guardians 3 was. So, I wanted to do Rocket & Groot first, and then I was talked into doing Guardians 3 instead of Rocket & Groot. I knew I needed to tell Rocket’s story.”
“Chris Pratt Has My Blessing”
Of the three aforementioned stories, it looks like Marvel has chosen to focus on Legendary Star-Lord, which centers on Peter Quill’s adventures on Earth. While Gunn would likely not be involved in any such project, he continues to support the Guardians team.
“Chris [Pratt] has my blessing, they all have my blessing. Chris keeps saying, ‘Is this okay?’ and I’m like dude, whatever, I’m totally okay with whatever you do. You go do it. I would love to see him be Star-Lord again,” he said.
When Will We See the Guardians Again?
In addition to a Star-Lord solo story, or perhaps even a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4, it seems likely that Rocket, Peter, Groot, and the other new Guardians of the Galaxy will appear in some capacity in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Infinity Wars.
For now, however, fans will have to wait and see.
