‘Ant-Man’ Star Judy Greer Explains Her ‘Quantumania’ Absence
When Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hit theaters in February 2023, the film was expected to launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) into its next phase and lay the foundation for the multiversal mayhem to come.
On the one hand, the decision to use Quantumania to properly introduce Jonathan Major’s Kang and propel the MCU forward made sense. By 2023, Ant-Man was an established franchise, and the nature of the Quantum Realm made it easy to explain where Kang had been hiding.
On the other hand, however, the decision was bizarre. Unlike The Avengers, Spider-Man, or the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Ant-Man franchise had traditionally focused on relatively low-stake stories, where the film’s characters got a chance to develop and shine.
The story of Ant-Man was that of a father who just wanted to do right by his family. It was not the tale of an intergalactic hero.
‘Quantumania’ Dumped Many of the Franchise’s Characters
The franchise lost much of its magic by taking Ant-Man’s story to the Quantum Realm. Not only did Ant-Man suddenly become less relatable, but the story became too fantastic. Additionally, the decision left many of the franchise’s supporting characters behind.
When Ant-Man was in another dimension, Judy Greer’s Maggie Lang, the ex-wife of Scott Lang and Cassie’s mother, was among those discarded.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Greer admitted that she would have loved to appear in the film, but Marvel had other plans.
“[I don’t] know why I wasn’t in Quantumania, by the way, but I went to the movie theater and saw it,” she said. “I don’t know why they didn’t put me in it, but I really wanted to be in it. It’s so much fun.”
In addition to Maggie, her second husband Jim Paxton (Bobby Cannavale), and Scott Lang’s X-Con Security team of Luis (Michael Pena), Dave (T.I.) and Kurt (David Dastmalchian) were also absent in Quantumania.
Will Maggie Get Powers?
Should Greer return to the MCU, she would like to finally see Maggie get superpowers. As it turns out, she has been asking for them for years.
“I was begging [Ant-Man trilogy director] Peyton Reed for a superpower. I was like, ‘Please, please, can I, like, run into someone on the street and get a superpower? Please, please, please?’” she explained. “And him and Paul [Rudd] would laugh at me, and then they never gave me one.”
With the future of the Ant-Man franchise muddled it remains to be seen if Greer will get her chance to return to the MCU. As Cassie will seemingly team up with Kate Bishop and Ms. Marvel to form the Young Avengers, however, perhaps Maggie’s story will continue after all.
