MarvelBlog News for April 6th, 2025
This week, Sony got serious…ish, and an unemployed actor begged for a Marvel job he already has.
We’ve had a kinda needy week for MarvelBlog News.
The Sony Update Part I

With rumors flying about the status of Tom Holland’s contract, Sony finally made a move this week.
Studio executives appeared at CinemaCon this week, and I’ll just be real about it.
The entire event reeked of desperation as nervous suits pretended like the movie industry as a whole is fine.
This is like when you notice a friend is bleeding, but they shrug it off as no big deal. Bleeding is ALWAYS a big deal.

Hollywood box office has been bleeding money for years, and it’s starting to feel like tomorrow never comes.
Throughout the pandemic, exhibitors thought that as long as they survived the shutdown, everything would be fine. It wasn’t.

Then, the Hollywood strikes shuttered productions and delayed films.
The prevailing belief was that as long as they survived 2024, everything would be fine. Again, it wasn’t.

Thus far, 2025 box office is trending behind 2024’s totals, and those were awful.
So, everyone at CinemaCon was stressed beyond belief as they revealed their new slates.

And you can imagine how Sony’s crew felt. Right now, they’re fighting the perception that Spider-Man 4 is a mess.
Nobody involved with Sony appeared to like the scripts, but the studio needs a new film. So, here we are.

Seeking a win, Sony rushed the stage to announce two different Spider-Man projects, both of which we’ve long expected.
Let’s start with the biggie. We now know that Spider-Man 4 will be called Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

For comic book fans, that title should grab your attention. Yes, it’s an implication of One More Day as well.
About Brand New Day

For Spider-Man fans, few topics are more controversial than the plot of Brand New Day.
For those unfamiliar with it, in the comics, Spider-Man chose to reveal his secret identity during the events of Civil War.

Kingpin, who is rumored to appear in Spider-Man 4, realized it was Peter Parker who had caused him so much grief.
So, Wilson Fisk called for a hit on Parker, which didn’t go as intended.

The gunshot struck Aunt May instead. A desperate Peter pled for help from anyone willing.
Said help came in the form of…Mephisto. Yes, teen superhero Peter Parker inexplicably made a literal deal with the devil.

A lot of fans on the internet LOATHED this storyline and vented about it for years after the fact. It was a whole thing.
Meanwhile, Mephisto’s demand was that Parker give up his marriage to Mary Jane.

Mephisto rewrote history so that Peter and MJ were no longer a couple. Yes, it was just that stupid.
Marvel wanted Peter Parker single, and that was the best idea anybody had to make it happen. Yikes, right?

This turn of events led to Brand New Day, which was a total reboot of the Spider-Man universe.
Marvel introduced a new batch of characters, one of whom became Peter’s new love interest.

So, that’s probably the general plot for the new film as well. The world will no longer know Peter Parker, the Spider-Man.
He’ll be forced to start anew and make new friends, one of whom is a redhead. If that’s true, Sadie Sink may be Jackpot.
Sony’s Other Big News

Not content to stop there, Sony doubled down on Spider-Man by revealing the date for another project.
The long-struggling conclusion to the Spider-Verse trilogy will debut in theaters on July 4th, 2027.

That’s good news for everyone, as the first two Spider-Verse films have been absolutely spectacular.
Sony even showed a small taste of new footage from Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Miles Morales says, “Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. I’m gonna do my own thing.”
That quote works on two levels, as we know that there’s another Miles Morales currently kidnapping the Miles Morales we know.

So, the tease did its job in reminding us how much we love the character.
Still, we shouldn’t overlook the fact that this film should have been out in March 2024. Yeah, it hasn’t gone well.

Sony’s just an absolute trainwreck right now, and the studio desperately needs Spidey to reverse its fortunes.
Otherwise, Sony as a movie studio may need to come up with a new plan or possibly even sell its content to a bigger fish.

I don’t mean to be hyperbolic here, but Sony’s on a bad run right now.
Marvel Miscellany

We’ve got one more story this week, and it’s absolutely hysterical to me.
Finn Jones appeared at the LaConve anime convention in Mexico, and he begged for a job. I’m not even joking.

The actor has heard the buzz that Marvel wants to bring back Jessica Jones and possibly even Luke Cage.
That’s all of The Defenders except for Iron Fist. You can understand why Jones may take that personally.

After all, he played Iron Fist. He’s feeling quite rejected right there with Marvel mentioning everyone but him.
So, Jones asked Marvel to give him another chance as Iron Fist, promising he’ll do better this time.

Here’s the full quote:
“There’s a lot of willingness for the fans to see that not happen as well. I’m very aware of the critiques of the character and my role in it.

Source: Marvel
“My response to that is like, give me a f’n chance, man. I’m here and I’m ready. I want to prove people wrong. So, I would love to see that happen.”
If Iron Fist returns, remember that it’s because Finn Jones willed the whole thing into existence at a fan convention.
