Let’s Talk about Daredevil Episode 1-7
When we last saw Daredevil, he was, well, Daredevil. Again.
Matt Murdock finally dropped the façade and embraced his inner demons.
The problem is that the current mayor of New York, Wilson Fisk, harbors an anti-vigilante opinion.
Fisk feels this way based on encounters with…Daredevil. So, the return of the masked man in the red suit is less than ideal.
After spending most of the season apart, the hero and villain of Daredevil will come together soon.
Let’s talk about Daredevil: Born Again episode 1-7, the one where everybody hates Muse.
Consequences and Repercussions
Nobody’s happy with what went down at the end of the previous episode.
Sure, Daredevil saved the day, but Angela Del Toro nearly died during the encounter.
At the mayor’s office, Fisk’s underlings inform him that Daredevil is back.
The Kingpin promptly tells them to get out as he tries to control his rage.
Despite the semi-cordial lunch at the start of the season, Murdoch and Fisk remain mortal enemies.
The sudden reemergence of Daredevil establishes that the Kingpin must respond proportionally. It’s about to get ugly.
First, everyone must deal with the ramifications of Muse’s murderous actions.
Chief among them is Angela, whose hospital sleep consists of Muse-related nightmares.
For his part, Murdock professes his love for Heather Glenn, but all is not well. He’s melting down due to the whole Daredevil thing.
The therapist senses that Murdock is going through some stuff, and that black eye would be a dead giveaway anyway.
On the mayor’s side, he laments the fact that Daredevil brought down ten years of business infrastructure.
Sure, it was a criminal operation, but Fisk seems to have forgotten that part.
Long story short, these two dudes hate each other, and that’s not gonna change anytime soon.
However, they share a commonality. Both of them want Muse brought to justice for all the murders.
Awkward Conversations
Remember Luca, the obnoxious member of the Five Families? Yeah, he got on Fisk’s bad side last time.
This week, we watch him make another tragic mistake, as he alienates Vanessa Fisk as well.
Vanessa agrees to meet Luca down by the docks, which seems ill-considered on his part.
The mayor’s wife sounds nonplussed by her husband’s recent decision-making.
She acts as if she may side with Luca if/when push comes to shove, which would be interesting.
The show is going out of its way to demonstrate that loyalty in the Fisk family only goes one way.
Luca complains that revenue has dropped dramatically since Wilson Fisk found politics.
The thug indicates that it’s time for a change, which Vanessa interprets as a request for help.
Before that story resolves, we cut to the therapist’s office, where Heather has finally taken an appointment with Bastian Cooper.
You may remember him from her book signing, when he begged for her to take him on as a client.
As Bastian discusses his life, Detective Angie Kim from episode five returns.
Ever the competent investigator, she has deduced that Muse is probably…Bastian Cooper. So, yeah. It’s about to get ugly.
During their conversation, Dr. Heather deduces that Bastian is Muse, and he knows it.
Moments after her epiphany, she’s debating whether she can make it to the door before he mugs her.
Spoiler: She can’t. Muse takes her hostage in her office and quickly plans her demise.
On top of everything else, the poor doctor probably won’t get paid for this session, either.
Muse vs. Daredevil II
As a reminder, Heather also provides therapy for the mayor. So, he’d be almost as unhappy about her murder as Murdock.
Thankfully, Detective Kim’s information has caused the mayor to act on his hunch. He’s sending police help
Alas, Daredevil arrives first. And he is pissed. The vigilante doesn’t pull any punches as he clubs Muse.
We learn during the episode that the former Bastian is an expert in taekwondo, which makes the fight somewhat equal.
By somewhat, I mean this battle is 80/20 for Murdoch as opposed to the first one, which was about 90/10. Hey, the kid’s improving!
During the episode, we also learn that Heather favors Kingpin’s side of the philosophical argument about vigilantes.
She inexplicably views all of them as the same. Did she…vote for Kingpin? Eek.
I’m starting to think her relationship with Matt isn’t going to last.
On the bright side, the Daredevil does save her life by disabling Muse.
Then, she pulls off a surprise by grabbing a gun and putting like four bullets in Bastian. Now he’ll never pay his bill.
Technically, Daredevil didn’t stop Muse, although he would have if needed. For her part, Heather gets cut and starts fading.
Muse’s surgical incisions leave much to be desired. He’s nothing but a butcher!
In the background, the cops arrive, which proves important. They know Daredevil is in there and want to take him out, too.
Obviously, that doesn’t happen, but Fisk improvises a Plan B that’s nearly as effective.
Stolen Valor
Fisk credits the dirty cops for bringing Muse to justice. It’s a lie fabricated of whole cloth, but it works.
Virtually everyone in the media runs with the story…except for BB Urich. She tells the truth about Murdock.
This choice leads to a terrifying encounter in the mayor’s office. Daniel Blake wants her to retract her story.
BB has no intention of doing that until Daniel makes it clear that she’ll regret any decision to lead with the truth.
To my surprise, BB relents and thereby tacitly acknowledges she’ll work for the mayor.
This seems like a good time to mention that Daniel earns a job promotion in this episode as well. He’s going places!
At the hospital, Heather emphasizes that she blames Daredevil for her condition as much as Muse, which is…a choice.
Fisk’s not having any better romantic luck. Vanessa seemingly betrays him by texting Luca the mayor’s location.
He’ll be alone and vulnerable, at least as far as Luca knows.
When the criminal goes to finish his nemesis, Fisk never even looks up from his dinner. He has no need.
His lackey, Buck, puts two bullets in Luca’s head. He’s been hiding in the shadows waiting to spring a trap.
Presumably, Vanessa hasn’t betrayed her husband, but we must wait until the next episode to verify that.
What we do know is that the city thinks the dirtiest cops on the force have saved everyone from Muse.
That is NOT going to lighten Matt Murdock’s mood any.
