FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER Will Debut New Captain America
Marvel Studios has finally released the first three episodes of WandaVision into the world, and so it’s time to start looking forward to the next phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe content we’ll be seeing on Disney+. And fortunately, the news is very exciting: according to Anthony Mackie – who plays Falcon – we’ll be seeing the new Captain America by the conclusion of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
The upcoming streaming series picks up after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. It will follow Mackie as Falcon (A.K.A. Sam Wilson) and Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier (A.K.A. Bucky Barnes), which may be considered the closest friends and allies of the previous Captain America, Steve Rogers, portrayed onscreen by Chris Evans.
After Endgame, we saw Wilson accept the shield from Rogers, as Barnes stood by in a supportive role. Whether or not this hints that Wilson will be the one stepping into Captain America’s role, as he did in the comics, remains to be seen.
Will Falcon Take Over the Mantle of Captain America?
While appearing on The Rich Eisen Show, Mackie emphasized that Wilson did not accept Captain America’s mantle in that Endgame scene, but rather, that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier would be a sort of long-form exploration of who would be the next Captain America.
In addition to candidates like the title characters in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, there’s also the possibility that John Walker (A.K.A. U.S. Agent), the federal government’s first choice for the new Captain America, ends up with the shield.
It looks like we’ll have to tune into the Disney+ series to find out! Is it possible that we may see Evans return to the role of Captain America? Could it possibly happen even before the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier? Will Bucky be the one to wield the symbolic shield next?
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is an original series from Disney+ and Marvel Studios, premiering March 19th, 2021.
