Look Sharp! BLADE to Begin Filming in 2021
According to reports corroborated by several pretty reliable blogs, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Blade reboot is set to begin production in September 2021.
The movie, which follows the half-vampire daywalking supernatural hunter Blade, will star Mahershala Ali in the eponymous role. MCU devotees will already be familiar with Ali thanks to his role as Cottonmouth, one of the villains of the first season of Netflix’s 2016 Luke Cage series. While many viewers (myself included) were disappointed when Ali’s Cottonmouth didn’t survive the show’s first season, the actor’s return in a starring role surely soothes the wound.
So far, Stacy Osei-Kuffour (Pen15, Watchmen) has been announced as writer for the movie, with a search for a director currently underway.
A History of Wampires
Previously, the role of Blade was played by Wesley Snipes in Blade (1998), Blade II (2002), and Blade: Trinity (2008).
Snipes sort of reprised the role for a cameo in the 2019 season one episode seven of What We Do in the Shadows, “The Trial,” which featured a plethora of actors who have previously portrayed vampires returning to the fangs once again.
This episode was notable for also including several other MCU cameos. Appearing as a wampire accused of turning a baby, there’s an appearance by Dave Bautista (who plays Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies).
There is also an appearance by Taika Waititi (the director of Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, who also plays Korg, and the co-creator of the original 2014 What We Do in the Shadows movie with Jermaine Clement, another Marvel alum from FX’s Legion).
That’s not all! Another MCU-alum, Tilda Swinton, also reprises her role as Eve the Wampire from Only Lovers Left Alive (which also co-stars Loki‘s Tom Hiddleston).
Blade Deep Cuts?
What are the odds that we get to see Ali’s Blade opposite Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in a big-screen adaptation of Deadpool: Dracula’s Gauntlet by Brian Posehn, Gerry Duggan, Reilly Brown, Khary Randolph, Scott Koblish, Nelson Decastro, Terry Pallot, Jim Charalampidis, Jim Campbell, Joe Sabino, and Chris Eliopoulous?
Maybe not that great, but this would be a great movie, so here at Marvel Blog, we want to believe!
