In New Marvel Series, PREDATOR Becomes Prey
Marvel Comics announced a new Predator series by Ed Brisson (writer) and Kev Walker (artist) in which the hunter will become the prey, debuting June 2021. Although Marvel Comics fans are most likely to recognize Predator from the blockbuster film franchise, the apex hunters have actually appeared on the panels of a number of comic books.
Marvel’s Predator #1
In this new series from Brisson (Uncanny X-Men, Ghost Rider) and Walker (Doctor Strange, Doctor Aphra), the creators will continue to expand on the feature films, but with an important twist – the predator becomes the prey.
The full Marvel Comics description reads:
In the near future, a young girl sees her family slaughtered by the deadliest and most feared hunter in the universe: a PREDATOR. Years later, though her ship is barely holding together and food is running short, Theta won’t stop stalking the spaceways until the Yautja monster who killed her family is dead…or she is.
Plus, Marvel promises that the series will “forge a violent, heartbreaking, unforgettable new chapter in the PREDATOR saga” that’s not to be missed!
For the new IP launch, there will also be a slew of variant covers (including wraparound camouflage ones) by Marvel’s premiere artists: Leinil Francis Yu, Ryan Brown, Philip Tan, Rahzzah, Peach Momoko, Ron Lim, Skottie Young, InHyuk Lee, and a launch cover variant by David Finch. Will you be collecting ’em all?
Hunting Down Predator’s Comic History
The Predator first appeared on-screen in a self-titled film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (Conan movies) and Carl Weathers (The Mandalorian). In the films, Predators are violent and ruthless hunters who kill humans and xenomorphs for sport.
Back in the 1990s, Dark Horse acquired the license to tie-in comics for the Predator film franchise, producing some outstanding comics like those we’ve discussed before here on Marvel Blog (with the two Archie vs. Predator crossovers being a personal favorite).
But in July 2020, Disney pulled the license to publish Alien, Predator, and AvP comics from Dark Horse — a right they gained from the acquisition of Fox – making way for the publication of new stories from those franchises at Marvel Comics.
Invasion of the Variants
Although the first Predator comic has not yet been published by Marvel, you may have already caught a glimpse of the extraterrestrial hunter at your local comic shop, thanks to a series of special crossover variant covers that feature the iconic Predator and Alien characters alongside the heroes of the Marvel Universe.
In the variants, Alien and Predator fight some of Marvel Comics greatest heroes – including Captain Marvel and Captain America – and they’re a great tease for what’s in store this June 2021!
