What If What If Changes the World?
Up until now, it seemed like each episode of What If..? was going to be a contained story that offered an alternate version of MCU history. However, the newly revealed poster (see it for yourself below) teases that the animated series may have broader consequences for the Marvel Multiverse than we originally anticipated.
On the Guardians of the Multiverse poster (found at F.Y.E. stores), it features Uatu as The Watcher, Peggy Carter as Captain Britain, T’Challa as Star-Lord, Erik Killmonger, Gamora, Black Widow, Doctor Strange, and an alternate version of Thor.
The poster confirms what we learned back in 2019. When Disney+ first announced the series was in development at Marvel, it was also announced that the show will adapt 1977’s What If? #47 by Peter B. Gillis, Kelley Jones, Sam DeLaRosa, Squid, and Bob Sharen, which asked the simple question, “What if Loki had found the hammer of Thor?”
So, maybe that’s why Thor looks more like Tom Hiddleston (or is that Matt Damon?) than Chris Hemsworth on the poster?
Uatu the Guardian of the Multiverse
If Uatu (Jeffrey Wright) is really traveling the multiverse to assemble a team of heroes, it wouldn’t be the first time. He’s been known to hop universes – and even franchises. At Marvel Blog, one of our favorite incarnations of Uatu is from the Amalgam Universe: Uatu the Guardian.
Uatu the Guardian who first appeared in 1996’s Speed Demon #1 by Howard Mackie, James Felder, Al Milgrom, Salvador Larroca, Kevin Tinsley, Malibu’s Hues, and Richard Starkings. He’s an omnipotent being who possesses vast cosmic powers including telekinesis and telepathy, but he’s taken a vow not to intervene with the dealings of the universe.
In the Amalgam Universe, the characters are a mashup of DC and Marvel comics, but also include special appearances from some of our favorite heroes and villains. It’s wacky. It’s fun. It’s hard to find. It’s the perfect bet for any comic collector waiting for What If…? Will you be picking some up?
