REPORT: What We Know About ARMOR WARS
Of all of the announced Marvel Cinematic Universe streaming shows we have to look forward to on the horizon, one seems more enigmatic than the others: Armor Wars, the show that will follow the plot of what happens to the proprietary technology of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) after his death at the climax of Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Here’s what we know so far about Armor Wars, Marvel Blog True Believers!
1. It Will Star Rhodey!
According to quotes from the Academy Award-nominated actor Don Cheadle, James “Rhodey” Rhodes will be the main character of Armor Wars.
Rhodey was the second character to pilot an Iron Man power suit in the MCU (I refuse to acknowledge Obadiah Stane (A.K.A. Iron Monger), even if his actor, Jeff Bridges, is a genius at playing a villain).
Rhodey recently appeared on Captain America and the Winter Soldier, paving the way to Disney+ for War Machine (or Iron Patriot, depending on which codename he’ll be using in Armor Wars).
2. It’s Set After Stark’s Death
In an interview with BroBible, Cheadle revealed that fallout from Stark’s death would be the driving force behind the series. This means that, like WandaVision and Captain America and the Winter Soldier, this show is likely set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, meaning it will be set in 2026 (or later) and catch up with the status quo of the MCU as we know it.
In other words, this means that unlike Black Widow, the Armor Wars Disney+ series will not be set in the past. However, that doesn’t mean Stark won’t appear in one form or another, Marvel Blog True Believers, maybe to help Rhodey continue to improve his armor…
3. It’s All About the Armor!
Cheadle also hinted that Armor Wars would once again look to the comics to build on the story of the Iron Man armor as the driving force of the series, saying:
Where we’ve been sort of progressing Rhodey – even in the last film where he’s now up again and he’s now walking again and he’s now mobile again – so as the technology continues to develop and we keep making innovations in the suit and what happens, I imagine there’s gonna be another elevation and another way that we’re going to keep digging into that part of Rhodey.
It looks like Armor Wars will be based on a 1987 story arc from Iron Man by David Micheline, Mark D. Bright, Bob Layton, Bob Sharen, and Janice Chiang.
In the Iron Man storyline, Stark discovers that his technology has been appropriated by both heroes and villains… and he’s going to put a stop to it!
One important thing to note: Justin Hammer, who was played by Sam Rockwell in Iron Man 2 and the short Hail to the King, plays a role in the comic book series. However, in the current MCU continuity, Hammer is incarcerated, but ready to re-enter the narrative…
