James Gunn Promises New Character in ‘The GotG Holiday Special’
In a Tweet sent on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021 during a social media Q&A session, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 1, Vol. 2, & Vol. 3 writer and director James Gunn revealed that not only will fans be meeting a brand-new character in the upcoming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+, but in Gunn answered that in his “subjective & admittedly often odd opinion,” the special will introduce “one of the greatest MCU characters of all time.”

But who could that character be, Marvel Blog True Believers? We have some hopes and dreams, and some far-fetched guesses from the panels of Marvel Comics’ holiday specials, as well as from Marvel TV and 20th Century Fox’s dropped roster of heroes, but we are going to have to wait until the special debuts to find out, especially knowing Gunn… the man who brought us the unknown cosmic Marvel team in the first place!
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
Gunn was responding to Twitter user @thejamescarlow, who specifically asked if there was going to be a new character in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which was first announced in December 2020, during that year’s Disney Investor Day.
As the title suggests, it will be a holiday-themed special that will see the Guardians team bringing some seasonal cheer to the MCU. The special will arrive for streaming on Disney+ in time for the 2022 holiday season, and it may tie directly into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5th, 2023.
While little is currently known about GotG Vol. 3, there are rumors that it will center Rocket Raccon (played by Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn on-set and voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Drax (Dave Bautista). Plus, it’s been hinted that it may be the final bow for both characters, especially the Bautista-played Destroyer.
Gunn has a busy schedule, and it isn’t just juggling the MCU that he has to think about.
The Suicide Squad, which Gunn wrote and directed for Warner Bros., was released earlier this year both in theaters and for streaming on HBO Max. And speaking of HBO, he’s currently working on a Peacemaker series for the streaming platform, a spinoff of The Suicide Squad.
Who Could It Be?
What “greatest of all time” MCU character will The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special introduce? In 2018, fans were treated to a PG-13 version of the Merc with a Mouth in Once Upon a Deadpool, proving that the character was a perfect fit for the MCU… could this be his introduction?
Or maybe, we will finally see the return of Frank Castle… after all, he has been known to save a holiday or two, even if it was just a few Pantsgivings.
