A Part of the MCU
Another aspect of the movie that this trailer leans into is the connection between Eternals and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. We already saw some of this in the initial teaser, which had the Avengers mentioned in dialogue. But this time in the teaser, there are several direct references to the Blip, as well as a tongue-and-cheek reference to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ famous slogan.
The trailer opens with voiceover narration that specifically explains how these new god-like characters relate to the rest of the MCU, with a focus on the Infinity Saga (and what happened with Thanos) and why they haven’t interfered before now.
Not only do we see Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) on screen, we see clips from Avengers: Endgame. However, each of these shots is presented in a dreamy, smoke-like style… Are we seeing some kind of “vision” power, or something?
After that, we hear that humans once considered the Eternals to be deities, and with the likes of Gilgamesh in their ranks, who has been elevated to the divine status of a god in some cultures, it’s no wonder that humankind has corollaries for the rest of the team as well.
With what Earth is about to face, it seems like humanity is about to believe in gods again, at least according to the voice over… but I thought in the MCU, humanity already believed in gods?
Finally, we get to see a glimpse of a Deviant, which looks like a vicious, dragon-like creature.
Then, after Richard Madden‘s Ikaris utters the phrase, “Eternals assemble,” paying homage (or perhaps poking some gentle fun at) the Avengers, we see several shots of the various characters in action, wearing their full costumes and showing off their individual powers, as they fight the Deviants in battle.
There’s a new superpowered team in town, Marvel Blog True Believers! Let’s hope they survive the experience…
