REVIEW: Sneak Emotional Attack in Hulu’s Hit-Monkey
All ten episodes in the first season of Hit-Monkey are currently available for streaming on Hulu, Marvel Blog True Believers! Have you had a chance to watch them yet? This animated series from Marvel Television tells the tale of a hit-man named Bryce (Jason Sudeikis) who dies during a job and becomes a ghost. Who’s he haunting? Monkey (Fred Tatasciore)! Can the duo work together to avenge the death of those most important to them (in Monkey’s case, his family; in Bryce’s case, himself)?
Note that, like Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., this series includes violence, gore, and coarse language, and should not be viewed by kids. You’ve been warned!
Hit-Monkey
What I liked about Hit-Monkey is the way that it lures you into a false sense of security by being over-the-top and ridiculous (it’s a show about a monkey who is a hit-man, after all). However, just when your defenses have been completely lowered by the comedy and violence, this show will hit you with some genuine emotion… and it always hits the target, Marvel Blog True Believers!
Some of my favorite scenes were the conversations that took place between Monkey and other animals, like a cat, an owl, and other monkeys. And the supporting human cast is great as well, with legendary actor George Takei delivering an especially awesome performance, and Olivia Munn and Ally Maki making me genuinely sad that it seems unlikely we’ll be getting another season of this series..
My only complaint here is that a reference to Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. in the middle of the season makes me all-too-sad thinking about the fact that this show was supposed to cross over with M.O.D.O.K., not to mention the probably-cancelled Howard the Duck and the definitely-cancelled Dazzler & Tigra.
But hey… at least we get ten incredibly funny, incredibly entertaining episodes of Hit-Monkey on Hulu.
