Issa Rae Wants to Celebrate Ambitious Women
In an interview posted to the InStyle website back in March 2020, Issa Rae, who will be playing the role of Spider-Woman in the highly anticipated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, spoke about what she hopes to accomplish with her work.
Day of Rae
Rae first gained notoriety back in 2011 thanks to her YouTube channel, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, and in 2015, she published a memoir that became a New York Times bestseller. Her first TV series, Insecure on HBO Max, which she wrote, executive produced, and starred in, aired its fifth season and series finale last night, on December 26th, 2021.
The actress has also appeared on the big screen in movies like 2020’s The Photograph and The Lovebirds.
“I think nothing makes me feel more powerful than creating something from start to finish,” Rae said to InStyle. “I think that’s just — not to be hubristic — but you’re kind of playing God at that point.”
According to Rae, it wasn’t always easy to stand tall among the men in the field.
“Part of me felt like I could not compete with my male peers in that way, who were proudly proclaiming all the things that they were gonna do,” Rae admitted to InStyle. “I think more women need to be celebrated across all industries for being ambitious. And I want to celebrate my fellow ambitions women.”
One way that she will be accomplishing this goal is by playing the role of Spider-Woman in the highly anticipated upcoming sequel, Into the Spider-Verse: Across the Spider-Verse.
