Does ‘Morbius’ Take Place in the MCU?
Sony and Marvel partnered to create what is one of the most successful films to ever hit cinemas, easily the most successful of the pandemic. With Sony’s next Spidey-centered adventure on deck, there has been some confusion on whether or not it is connected. So, does Morbius take place in the MCU?
Jared Leto shocked many when he opted to take on the role of Michael Morbius in Sony’s highly anticipated Morbius.
The film covers one of the more interesting members of Spider-Man’s illustrious rogue’s gallery and presents to fans a sympathetic vampiric villain that is more than he appears.
It was the underutilization of that character that caused many fans to be puzzled at the decision, but with Sony dedicated to building their very own Spider-Verse, it was only perceived as an opportunity for the studio to greatly explore a character previously unknown to general audiences.
Yet, when a trailer was first released for the film, fans were surprised at the appearance of Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes, who is better known by fans as the villainous Vulture, who appeared in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
With many fans uncertain as to what this means, the reveal begged the question: Does Morbius take place in the MCU?
The answer is complicated.
With the introduction of the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the rules as to which characters exist in which universe no longer apply in a linear sense.
Could the story of Michale Morbius take place in the MCU? Certainly. Allowing the vampiric Morbius to take his rightful place opposite Tom Holland’s Peter Parker within this new MCU trilogy.
But, could Michael Morbius’s story take place within the same Sony Universe as Tom Hardy’s Venom? Also, certainly.
With Sony continuing the development of its very own Spider-Verse, it is plausible to imagine a circumstance where Morbius continued to carve out its own place within its own universe that the multiverse may allow certain variants of MCU characters to appear.
Only time will tell, and luckily fans have less than a month to see just where Morbius takes Sony and the Spider-Man universe.
