RETRO REVIEW: Marvel Spotlight (1972) #2
In Marvel Spotlight (1972) #2, we a story that introduces Werewolf By Night, a character who is going to be very important in 2022! Here’s the Marvel Blog Retro Review of this important issue, which came out in 1972… that’s fifty years ago, Marvel Blog True Believers!
Marvel Spotlight (1972) #2
Marvel Spotlight (1972) #2 tells the story “Werewolf By Night” by Gerry Conway, Michael Ploog, and John Costa, which was conceived by and plotted by Roy and Jeanie Thomas.
This story follows Jack Russell, A.K.A. the eponymous Werewolf By NIght. Obviously, “Jack Russell” is one of the best alias names in comics (which is saying something)! The story is set in Southern California, which I always appreciate. As much as I love seeing New York City as a setting, as a SoCal resident, it’s especially exciting to me when Marvel Comics use the area for their stories!
I enjoyed the art in this issue, which featured tons of classic horror tropes. Not only does Werewolf By Night spend a lot of time outside after dark, often in the rain, but there are scenes where he jumps out of shadowy corners and lunges at the human antagonist – very classic horror moments, which were tons of fun in Marvel Comic form.
The origins of Werewolf By Night are explained in a subsequent 1972 issue, Marvel Spotlight #4. There, we learn that Jack got his powers by reading from the Darkhold.
We’ll be seeing more of Werewolf By Night later this year, thanks to an upcoming MCU holiday special starring a version of the character.
