RETRO REVIEW: Wolverine (1982) #1
In Wolverine (1982) #1 by Chris Claremont, Frank Miller, Josef Rubinstein, Glynis Wein, and Tom Orzechowski, the eponymous hero heads to Japan in order to track down a figure from his past. With the arrival of the new year, it’s been forty years since this issue was published. Let’s take a look, Marvel Blog True Believers!

First and foremost, shout out to the cover of this issue, which is one of the most iconic images of Wolverine ever to come out of Marvel Comics (and that’s saying something, Marvel Blog True Believers… there’s been no shortage of depictions of the mutant from the House of Ideas over the years).

One of my very favorite scenes in the book was the first one, in which Wolverine must deal with a bear who has been poisoned. Although he does not want to kill the bear, there is no other choice. While it is tragic that the bear does not survive, this scene is extremely well executed.

The rest of Wolverine (1982) follows the eponymous super hero as he travels to Japan to find Mariko Yashida. I believe that the relationship between Mariko and Wolverine has been a significant influence on Demon Days, so it’s fun to see how the seeds for that 2021 comic were planted four decades earlier.

In addition to inspiring the ongoing Demon Days comic, I also believe this storyline (at least in part) inspired the 2013 movie The Wolverine, so it is interesting to discover some of the ways that the movie drew inspiration from the comic.
