REVIEW: Complicated Phoenix Family Stuff in Avengers #51
In Avengers #51 by Jason Aaron, Juan Frigeri, David Curiel, and Cory Petit, with a main cover by Javier Garrón & Curiel, we catch up with that reality-hopping Deathlok army… and find out more about the possibility that Thor’s maternal birth parent might just be the freaking Phoenix!
Avengers #51 feat. Phoenix
This issue opens on a scene between Tony and Thor in Asgard, with the pair discussing the possibility that Thor’s true birth mother just might have been the Phoenix Force.
I particularly enjoyed this scene both because the dynamic between the two Avengers was handled well, and because the content of the discussion was interesting and engaging… especially the idea that achieving the kind of things the Avengers achieve may only be possible when one is coming from a messed-up parental situation!
Another aspect of this story I liked were some of the individual members of the multiversal Masters of Evil. This team of the greatest supervillains from various realities includes a version of Killmonger who uses marks on his arms to keep track of how many Thors he has killed! He’s running around the Megaverse in armor made of an Asgardian Destroyer mixed with Wakandan Tech. What’s not to love here, Marvel Blog True Believers?
And on top of that, they also have a Phoenix, and one who has more experience wielding her abilities than Echo does, to boot. All this adds up to an action-packed issue that featured tons of fun Marvel multiversal action! No surprise, considering the groundwork laid in Heroes Reborn.
