Benedict Cumberbatch Wants to Remain in the MCU…Under One Condition
Portraying one of the most important pieces in the ever-growing Marvel Universe, the former sorcerer supreme Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch wants to remain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe…under one condition.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has easily been Marvel’s biggest film of 2021, and one of their most ambitious endeavors ever; celebrating 20 years of the character’s on-screen history.
A major part of that was the former sorcerer supreme, Doctor Strange, whose magic helped Peter Parker (Tom Holland) escape the reality in which everyone knew his secret identity.
With the characters second solo outing coming in the form of the long-awaited and highly anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it appears that the future is overwhelmingly bright for the character.
His immense knowledge, power, and charisma make him one of the studio’s most vital pieces moving forward (as long as he can avoid messing up any more spells, anyhow).
Yet, the world of Marvel movies – for as incredible artistically and financially rewarding they must be – seem like a lot. Between the physical demands, the immense time commitment required, and the consistency with which the films are being made, being a recurring character in the MCU requires commitment.
For the man behind the magic, staying within the Marvel universe is just a matter of artistic integrity, as Cumberbatch wants to remain in the MCU…under one condition.
Speaking with USA Today, the veteran actor was asked about his continued place in the Marvel universe, to which he responded simply, “As long as the characters is interesting and challenging and doing fantastic things in the MCU, why not?”
It does seem like Cumberbatch values his character, and will only reprise the role for projects that care for that character as much as he does, with his major hesitancy in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness being his fear regarding his character’s place in such a big film.
Speaking on WTF With Marc Maron about the film’s focus, Cumberbatch stated, “Yeah, well, yeah that’s part of the problem. There’s a lot of stuff going on in it. It’s like, ‘do I have a character arc in this? Is it working?'”
Cumberbatch concluded his statement, however, comfortable with his place in his second solo film as the character, stating, “There’s great stuff for me to do in it. It’s very busy. It’s called The Multiverse of Madness and its bonkers.”
I cannot wait to see Cumberbatch reprise his role in the long-awaited sequel, and hope that he can always find his home in this incredible universe, playing that incredible character.
