New Merch May Confirm America Chavez as the MCU’s Next LGBTQ+ Hero
The most anticipated Marvel film of 2022 thus far, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, could feature a monumental debut as new merch may confirm America Chavez as the MCU’s next LGBTQ+ hero.
Spider-Man: No Way Home was the clear movie event of the year, with the instant classic catapulting the MCU into the remaining projects of Phase Four with clear ramifications that can be felt throughout.
The highly anticipated follow up, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, features the direct ramifications of the former sorcerer supreme tampering with the highly delicate fabric of the multiverse.
In the film that should have massive implications for the greater MCU, fans will first be introduced to one of the coolest, strongest, reality jumping heroes in Marvel comics; America Chavez.
The young Latino hero has easily sported one of the coolest powers in the entire Marvel Universe- the ability to fly, be nearly impenetrable, have superhuman strength, and, oh yeah, punch star-shaped doors to alternate realities- Chavez has been a consistent presence in the Young Avengers since her debut.
One aspect of the character that has endeared her to the audience is that she is a member of the LGBTQ+ community; a fact that seems to be following the character into her on-screen debut.
Although her sexual preference is a key part of the characters appeal- as she was an important hero for many who can relate to her struggles- there were some concerns as to how Marvel Studios would handle that aspect of her character; with their track record, however, was there ever any doubt?
It appears new merch may confirm America Chavez as the MCU’s next LGBTQ+ hero, with a brand new t-shirt featuring the characters signature denim jacket giving some interesting clues to the character.
Featuring what looks like a pride flag on the jackets left pocket, it also features the writing, “Amor es Amor,” which in the characters native Spanish means, “Love is Love.”
The character does feature lesbian mothers in the source material, which could also explain the LGBTQ+ support on the characters jacket; but all signs point to Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios continuing their charge for greater representation in the MCU, and embracing America Chavez LGBTQ+ identity.
