REVIEW: Marvel on Marvel in Avengers Forever #1
In Avengers Forever #1 by Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, Cam Smith, Jason Keith, Tríona Farrell, and Cory Petit, with a main cover by Kuder & Keith, we get a story subtitle “Where ‘Hope’ Is a Four-Letter Word,” with characters that show us what happens when you put Marvel on Marvel!
Building on the groundwork laid by previous stories like Heroes Reborn and one of the Free Comic Book Day issues released by Marvel Comics last year, Avengers Forever #1 is a cross-dimensional thrill ride that features one of my very favorite characters: Robbie Reyes, A.K.A. the Ghost Rider!
Avengers Forever #1: Marvel on Marvel
Just like some of those other stories I mentioned, Avengers Forever takes us to a parallel world where there are somewhat different versions of the heroes we know from the pages of Marvel Comics. For example, on Earth-818, Tony Stark’s backstory is sort of a mix of Iron Man’s and Ant Man’s. He fights Venom Ants and he shrinks down bottles of rum so he can “pop them like pills.” And best of all, he uses a Knowhere gun that fires a beam on , built from the Celestial’s head, found during one of this Stark’s archeological hunts and presumably shrunk down using his “Stark Particles.”
It’s a bunch of interesting remixes of familiar characters, just like Heroes Reborn (but less New-ish 52-ish, more Marvel on Marvel – another example is the War Machines, who have a lot of The Punisher in them).
On top of all that, I especially enjoyed the dynamic between Ghost Rider and the undead Deathlok. This was quite the character pairing, Marvel Blog True Believers!

The most devoted of Marvel Blog True Believers will recall that I was particularly excited about a variant cover by Russell Dauterman featuring my favorite character, the Scarlet Witch… and I was able to score a copy of this variant! Check it out!
