Pick of the week Wastelanders: Black Widow is the third and latest in the Wastelanders series of narrative podcasts from Marvel Entertainment and Sirius XM.
Written by Alex Delyle and directed by Timothy Busfield, with music and sound design by Daniel Brunelle, Wastelanders: Black Widow stars Susan Sarandon as Helen Black, a woman with an enigmatic past.
Set in a New York City that has become (even more of a) surveillance state, the action begins when Lisa Cartwright (Chasten Harmon), who has just begun work as a Junior Residential Security Analyst at Panopticog Solutions… and she notices some strange things about a newcomer to The Onar, the mysterious Black.
The Onar is a 161-story apartment complex in the ruins of Midtown Manhattan, where the disparity between the haves and the have-nots has been very stark in the decades since V-Day (the Day the Villains Won… there’s a reason Earth sucks in the world of Wastelanders).The ultra-rich families who live in the top ten floors of the building enjoy opulent penthouses, while the 100 Block below (where Black moves in) features more modest accommodations.
After Black moves in, her nosy neighbor, Doctor Brian Mizuno, asks her (through the wall) what brought her to The Onar. Black’s answer? “Problems with an ex…”
