How Saying Goodbye to Spider-Man Helped Tom Holland Make ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’
A film so emotional, it turns out that saying goodbye to Spider-Man helped Tom Holland perform at his best during Spider-Man: No Way Home.
One of Marvel’s clearest triumphs, Spider-Man: No Way Home has proven to be one of their most successful films both with audiences and critics alike; on top of the film performing at the post-pandemic box office in unprecedented fashion.
Sony and Marvel partnered to craft what is perhaps the greatest Peter Parker story ever told and developed a narrative that seemed intent on celebrating Spider-Man and the vast history both in the source material and on the big screen.
The film gave viewers a brutal and tragic experience that truly highlighted the heroism that makes Spider-Man perhaps the greatest comic book creation of all time; while also proving the young actor who has played the character for the last six years with easily his greatest challenge yet.
Speaking with Deadlines Peter Hammond, Holland spoke about the acting challenge of the film; in particular, the scene in which Peter must watch his Aunt May die before his very eyes.
As it turns out, saying goodbye to Spider-Man helped Tom Holland give that moment the emotional vulnerability necessary for fans to be truly devastated for our hero.
“Yeah, I mean it was emotional, there definitely was a sense for me as an actor that this was the last time that I could potentially don the suit so a lot of that emotion came from the act of saying goodbye,” Holland stated, “Which is one of the biggest themes throughout this film.”
Holland continued, “I would get emotional at kind of how proud I was of the situation we were in, and that what we were doing and that I really believed in what we were doing… It was tough, but you know anything hard is worthwhile.”
Tom Hollands’ future playing Spider-Man has been a constant source of speculation by fans, but his adoration for the character and the stories he’s been able to tell is abundantly clear.
One hopes that the goodbyes that motivated his performance, are prolonged from ever happening to the MCU’s Peter Parker; cause the MCU is a better place with Holland continuing to portray what is perhaps the greatest Spider-Man we’ve ever seen.
