Channing Tatum Deserves His Chance to Play Gambit
One of the casualties of the high-profile Fox takeover by Disney was the in-development solo film chronicling the iconic Marvel Mutant, and the fallout robbed fans of a passion project that proves Channing Tatum deserves his chance to play Gambit.
It was the highest-profile acquisition in the world of films since Disney took over the highly coveted Lucasfilm a decade ago; the Fox Studios takeover went down as one of the most interesting ever in terms of what it meant for the future of one of Disney’s most prominent projects.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has consistently been among Disney’s most valuable assets and has been one of the most interesting and dominant Cinematic endeavors that the industry has ever seen.
With the acquisition of Fox, Marvel Studios were given access to character rights that Marvel had sold away long ago; when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy in the early 2000s.
The X-Men, Fantastic Four, and others came home once again, and the MCU was wrought with possibilities as to how these iconic Marvel characters could make their way into the vast Live-action cinematic universe that has been building for more than a decade.
Although many characters returned home, and some failing franchises received opportunities to be reborn under the guidance of the highly successful Marvel Studios mold, there were Fox projects that were scrapped as a result of Disney’s necessity to rebuild the many characters they acquired.
One of these casualties was the often rumored Gambit solo film starring Channing Tatum; who was set to produce and direct the project with his production partner Reid Carolin.
The project never happened, and the man who was set to star has been outspoken about how difficult it was to get over the death of the project.
Yet, listening to his passion, his background, and his adoration for the character, it is abundantly clear that Channing Tatum deserves his chance to play Gambit when he, inevitably, enters the MCU.
Tatum was very clear about how much he adored Gambit, even stating that being, “traumatized,” by the film’s cancelation left him unable to watch Marvel movies.
But there is more than just his love for the character, there are similar backgrounds, with Gambits Remy Lebeau being from the New Orleans Area- leading to his now-iconic accent- and Tatum growing up in the same area prior to his teenage years.
He physically fits the role also, with Tatum known for his looks and charm fitting perfectly for a character who is so strongly defined by their attractiveness and how they use that.
Perhaps the underrated quality of the casting, however, is Tatums willingness to be the butt of the joke; something on full effect in the 21 Jump Street movies, Tatum has shown a willingness to embrace comedy, something that will greatly benefit a character that is so easily made comedic.
It is a near certainty that Gambit will appear in the MCU at some point, and we truly believe that Channing Tatum deserves his chance to play the character he knows and loves, so well.
