Tom Hiddleston Calls Himself the, “Temporary Torchbearer,” for Loki Role
In a recent interview, veteran Marvel Actor Tom Hiddleston discussed his time as the iconic villain, while noting that he is just the “temporary torchbearer,” for the Loki role.
There are few actors within the MCU that have begun as a villain, only to carve out a recurring role that is as vital as any in the entire functioning of the Marvel Universe.
Back in 2012, Tom Hiddleston was a brand new face to the world of franchise films and reprised his supporting role as the god of mischief, Loki, that he originated within the Marvel Universe a year earlier.
He brought an undeniable charisma to the role, and a humourous cunning that endeared the Norse god to fans, and made his presence within the MCU a necessity.
As Thor was greater explored within various films, so too was his adopted brother, and Hiddleston’s role as the character of Loki only grew more expansive, and all the more complex.
Following the death of the main MCU Loki at the hand of the Mad Titan Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Hiddleston reprised his role following Avengers: Endgame; which saw the god get a hold of the Tesseract, and inadvertently craft a brand timeline.
The beloved Disney+ series, Loki, followed these events, and Tom Hiddleston became the actor tasked with playing the eponymous character in a series that introduced the vast and consulted idea of the multiverse into the MCU; an idea that has become the foundation for the studio’s fourth phase.
In a recent statement recorded by Variety, the beloved Marvel actor commented on the importance of the role, and its place in history; eventually stating that Tom Hiddleston was only a small contributor to the legacy of the Loki character.
“I’m a temporary torchbearer,” Hiddleston remarked, “I’ve always thought that. It’s a great role. It’s an archetype, the trickster god, the agent of chaos. I’m just here interpreting that for the time being.”
Hiddleston concluded, “Loki has been here for centuries and will be here for centuries more and I’m just stepping into that silhouette for now.”
The Marvel Universe interpretation of the famed Norse Mythological figure has become perhaps the most wildly known- and adored- iteration of the character; but Hiddleston is undoubtedly correct in the reality that he is just the latest to interpret the character of Loki that will live on well beyond the actor himself.
