Marvel Producer Explains How ‘What If…?’ and ‘Loki’ Connect to ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
The interconnectivity of the MCU has gradually become its greatest selling point, but with so much content it remains as important as ever for fans to consume everything they can to remain up to date; one Marvel producer recently explained how What If…? and Loki connect to Doctor Strange 2.
One of the most speculated films in the MCU’s decade-long run has undoubtedly been the long-awaited sequel epic Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The promotional campaign has flooded fans with more questions than answers and has stoked the flames of curiosity by including some memorable moments that harken back to past MCU titles.
ComicBook.com recently reported on a recent interview with Marvel Producer Richie Palmer published in D23 Magazine that explains how What If…? and Loki connect to the impending Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Recorded in the Spring issue, Palmer spoke about the influence that writer Michael Waldron’s work on Loki had on the upcoming sequel film, and how that series primed what he was able to do with the script for Doctor Strange 2.
PArticularly it was the introduction of variants, and the exploration of the multiverse in Loki that allowed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to be freed from the bounds of exposition and focus on the more human elements of the characters
Palmer stated, “It was really exciting. We found that we didn’t need to spend a lot of time recapping the rules; we felt the audience would get a lot of that by now. With Michael, we could jump into telling a good story within what’s already been established.
“Michael’s strength is the character stuff.” PAlmer continued, “As you saw in Loki, all the best moments involved the characters against the backdrop of those alternate timelines. It’s kind of like that in our movie, too. Michael’s script brought a lot of heart to sci-fi concepts such as the multiverse.”
in regard to the film’s connection with the What If…? episode it seems to mirror, Palmer noted, “Things get pretty trippy. We love that episode of What If…? and we hope to do it justice.”
Palmer also noted, “It shows another version of Doctor Strange- one who let the universe he lived in be destroyed because of his love for Christine. If he was capable of that, for a selfish reason, is that something that our Stephen would be capable of doing, too?”
“We’d like to think, ‘No, out guys the hero,'” Palmer concluded, “But you never know.”
We cannot wait to see just how all of it ties together with the May release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!
