Taron Egerton Compares Playing Wolverine to, “Playing James Bond”
There are few comic book characters who are as well known as the X-Men icon, and with his name flooding the rumor mill as a potential performer to bring him to life once again, Taron Egerton compared portraying Wolverine to playing James Bond.
Marvel’s history is riddled with characters that are well known even outside of the world of comic books; with Spider-Man, and various Avengers, reaching cult status well before they made appearances in live-action adaptations.
A curious case, and a character that remained on the fence of that same cult status, was Wolverine; a comic book character that was certainly well known, but hadn’t broken through into the cultural zeitgeist until his appearance in the Fox X-Men films of the 2000s.
Hugh Jackman rose to fame portraying the character for over a decade, and it was with that performance that Logan became a true beloved force for Marvel comics outside of the world of comic book fans were concerned.
That adoration from mainstream audiences has led to a level of expectation upon who Marvel decides to replace the Jackman, and portray the character for his inevitable appearance in the MCU.
Jackman wasn’t just the originator of the role, he was nearly flawless, and endeared himself to fans, making the inheritor of the character in for a very difficult task; a task that one actor says is comparable to a very different, but also iconic, film character.
Taron Egerton, an actor that has been rumored to take up the claws as the character of Wolverine, recently compared portraying the character to being asked to play the long-running super spy, James Bond.
CBR.com reported his statement from an interview in which Egerton responded to the casting rumors, as he stated, “There no truth in it at all. There’s no truth in it. It would be, obviously, really editing, but I don’t know.”
When, subsequently, asked if he would take on the character, Egerton continued, “That’s like playing Bond…It would be exciting to play a role where you play to such a huge audience. Those movies are the most-watched movies in the world.”
Egerton concluded, “It’s a great thrill, and it’s a great part. But there’s no truth in it. Very flattering, though.”
