‘Morbius’ Director Confirms a Version of Spider-Man Exists in Sony’s Marvel Universe
The man responsible for orchestrating the story of the living Vampire has confirmed the existence of Marvel’s most iconic character, as Morbius director Daniel Espinosa confirms a version of Spider-Man does exist in Sony’s Spider-Verse.
There isn’t a single film in the industry that has suffered from the unpredictability of the pandemic in the way that Morbius has.
Sony’s latest addition to their film universe of Spider-Man characters has become the most delayed film of all time, and will finally be ready for audiences in just one week.
The film will introduce the character of Micahel Morbius, played by Jared Leto, and tell the story of the man dedicated to protecting and preserving life as a doctor, who becomes a monstrous creature that requires human blood to survive.
One thing that is tremendously interesting about the character, however, is that he is synonymous with the hero he has so often faced off against in the comic books; as his relationship with Spider-Man is so crucial to understanding his role as an anti-hero.
In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, the Morbius director Daniel Espinosa confirmed that a version of Spider-Man does, in fact, exist in the ever-developing Sony universe; the question is, just who will be the inheritor of the Spider Totem of this very separate universe.
When asked about Spider-Man for the Sony Universe, Espinosa stated, “Of course! I mean, in almost all Spider-Verse or, you know, the (universes) that existed in the Marvel universe, if you read the comic books, the whole idea of that kind of- the Marvel string theory, if you could call it that.”
Espinosa continued, “Its very related to, if you remember, the alternative Seinfeld’s, You have a world where you have the same characters, and its ALL of the characters, but they are slightly different. So in almost all verses, you have a Spider-Man, or a fantastic four, or a Tony Stark, or a Morbius.”
“But they will be different in tone,” the director continued, “That’s not quite the way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (is) approaching the idea, but they’re remaining to some core truth. Then you have the second kind of legend, which is about the totem.”
Espinosa concluded, “Which is that, in all universes, there is a spide totem. which means that in all universes, there has to be a Spider-Man. Or a Spider-Women.”
It is interesting to consider that Sony has crafted a universe in which there could be a plethora of MCU characters done in different ways; which could explain Adrian Toome’s appearance in the new film.
What adds to the intrigue is that Jared Leto has already stated his desire to work with Tom Holland, so only time will tell which kind of Spider-Man we will get in the Sony Universe.
